We found the Sonoma County Fairgrounds to be so nice that we decided to stay over an extra day. As with the previous fairground, this one also had (as someone said) 'smokin' hot WiFi' which is nice for doing internet stuff. It turns out that Charles Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts characters, lived and worked here. Of course there is a museum for that here, and Mary Lou found some more new friends. Luther Burbank also lived and worked here. He was a horticulturist that did research on plants and developed new strains and hybrids of roses, pansies, trees, and much more. (if you want to know more, look it up). From here we took a side drive to the wine country of Sonoma. This and the Napa Valley further on down the road is probably the most famous of the California wine country. The wine country south of Paso Robles that we toured before San Francisco is developing and is beginning to challenge this northern area for wine recognition. This weekend was something special in wine tasting so the limos were out, taking the connoisseurs around to the various wineries. Mary Lou got tipsy just driving through here. Here's a winery. Here's a closeup of how the vines are supported. We must have see millions of stakes and millions of miles of wire in all the vineyards we have seen. This one has extra strands above. It's hard to imagine the hand labor (and walking) it takes to maintain, pick the grapes, and prune back all these miles of rows of grape vines. Particularly on the mountainsides. Back in Santa Rosa, we discovered this 60 ft. tall obelisk, or locally called a 'cyclisk', made from the parts of 350 bicycles. That's a good use for bicycles. While at the Schulz museum, we found in the parking lot a tract from a local Baptist Church advertizing their Easter services. Just what we were looking for! We attended this morning and were very blessed by the friendliness and energy of this small congregation. They didn't have any doughnuts, but they did serve a delicious brunch.
We are now ready to move on and we don't know where we will spend the night tonight. But you can be assured we will be somewhere. See you on down the road. Stay tuned.
